The fashion industry has continued to be hit with harsh words regarding its lack of diversity on the runways and in major advertising campaigns. Trailblazers like Bethann Hardison has championed the cause of diversity in the industry. A former model herself, Hardison’s Diversity Coalition has certainly created small changes in the business. Although the numbers are still very small; according to a report by Jezebel it was a 1.29% increase in diversity since the spring 2014 runways shows.

Balmain’s fall 2014 campaign is one that is making headlines in fashion because of the use of only one white model. The campaign was shot by photographer Mario Sorrenti and features Jourdan Dunn, Cara Delevingne, Ysaunny Brito, Issa Lish, Binx Walton and Kayla Scott. Olivier Rousteing, Balmain’s Creative Director, said that showing beauty of different ethnicities actually was a reflection of modern cities. Like his own unique position of being a young black man heading the realms at one of France’s most important fashion houses.
