STYLE | Duro Olowu – Spring 2014

Duro Olowu does it again with his boldly coloured, well constructed collection for spring 2014.  He is a designer who manages to bring together an aesthetic that perfectly balances American, British and Nigerian style.  He was once quoted as saying that his design inspiration is very instinctive because of his international upbringing.  He also said his design “is very reflective of the way I think about life…it’s like cooking a big pot of stew you don’t measure everything and you see how everything works out.”  He regularly travels showing his work between America and the U.K., he also frequents Paris.

Hot off a successful collaboration with JC Penny earlier this year, this spring 2014 line is a mix of colour, brilliant patterns and sleek minimal silhouettes.  He adds a punch to otherwise dull patterns.  He had everything from capes to camisoles and a well designed coat in a rich hue of cobalt blue contrasted with white.

Despite the turn of warmer weather in spring, the capes seem to be a staple item for this collection; perfect for early spring or those cooler April nights.  Made with an elegant structure the simplicity itself makes it a stand-alone piece but add the patchwork of colours and various patterns and the cape becomes the statement.

Pretty with a sense of modern edge, each look seems to bring out the confidence of today’s international woman.
