On September 5th, 2024, Max Original’s highly anticipated docuseries “Coming From America” will premiere, offering viewers a rare glimpse into the lives of four African American families who made the life-changing decision to relocate to Africa. Among them is the Jones family, a dynamic and inspiring couple from Houston who packed up their belongings and moved to Ghana in search of a deeper connection to their ancestral roots.

Tony and Ayo Jones’s journey to Ghana began years ago, driven by a strong desire to reconnect with their cultural heritage. Ayo’s Ghanaian father had already retired to Ghana in 2020, and Tony’s first visit to the country in 2016 left a mark on him, affirming his belief that Ghana was the place to call home. With two of their four children, Tony and Ayo embarked on their bold adventure, seeking freedom, a richer cultural experience, and to build a stronger family bond.

Since their relocation, the Joneses have documented their experiences through their platform, Expat Life Ghana, sharing the highs and lows of adapting to a new life in Ghana. From navigating culture shock to embracing local customs, their story is one of resilience and hope.

During the height of the pandemic, I had the privilege of interviewing Tony and Ayo for my YouTube Channel. Our conversation highlighted the fact they wanted to move to Ghana but the pandemic and border closures delayed their plans.  We truly connected in the conversation and I was happy to meet them in person when they finally were able to move to Ghana when the borders opened six months later. Over time, we have a friendship and happened to also live not too far from one another. They have really built a community in Ghana with regular meet n greet events to socialize and meet some of their YouTube followers.
