Happy International Women’s Day!

InternationalWomensDay

“This is a man’s world, But it wouldn’t be nothing, nothing, without a woman or a girl.”  – James Brown

Since 1911, International Women’s Day is celebrated around the world on March 8th.  There are thousands of events that take place in all parts of the world to recognize and mark the day with significance.  It’s especially important not only to celebrate the advancements made by women, but to also recognize that there is still so much change that needs to happen.  Women are still seen as second class citizens in many parts of the world.  Many girls and women still are not allowed to attend school in some countries.  Violence and rape against women continues to be a problem.  Poverty affects more women than it does men.

In countries where equal rights for women is more accepted and openly spoken about, there are still drastic inequalities when it comes to equal pay for equal work and being passed over for opportunities because of gender.  The battle for women still continues.

This year’s theme for International Women’s International Day is ‘Make it Happen’.  It’s meant to “encourage effective action for advancing and recognizing women.”

This is a great day to use social media for sharing quotes, facts, ideas, events, photos and more. The following are the hashtags being used throughout the day:

  • #MakeItHappen
  • #womensday
  • #IWD2015
  • #internationalwomensday
  • #PaintItPurple

Remember that even though it is celebrated on a single day, it’s a cause that should be continually spoken of on a continual basis.  Women’s rights are a daily affair and should not be forgotten once the day of global celebration is gone.
