African inspired design continues to make its mark in the fashion industry. Stella Jean is an Italian based designer that uses African printed fabrics in most of the collections. She fuses culture from her Haitian roots with West African wax prints and Italian craftsmanship. I first spotted Stella Jean clothing at Holt Renfrew in Toronto this past summer. I was amazed at some of the pieces and also thought about how I’ve seen so much of this type of styling in Ghana and from other African countries for a long time. Take a look at how singer Rihanna rocked this dress on her trip to the White House recently getting her #Scandal inspiration poses on. She posted pics on instagram which put the designer in the spotlight.
I actually wrote about the designer on my old blog Style & Culture back in October 2013. Click HERE to read: Ethical Fashion Milan

I first saw this dress whilst flipping through my Flipboard magazine. I almost passed it and was like ‘whoa!’ isn’t that African print? Giving me ideas!

I’ve actually seen this designer’s clothing in Toronto. Dresses over $200-$800 When I saw the items I immediately thought, “These are like clothes I see selling in shops in Ghana.” She’s a Haitian-Italian designer. I also wrote about her on my old blog over a year ago. Click here to see: http://www.styleandcultureblog.com/2013/10/culture-ethical-fashion-milan-fashion.html

Most definitely. She’s been hustling at being a designer and now Rihanna has put her in the international spotlight.
