New York Fashion Week wrapped up last week and there were some stand-out trends for the coming spring season. There was a definite shift from the baring midriff crop tops of late to sky high, thigh baring slit skirts and dresses. The leg was certainly showing plenty of skin on many runways including Donna Karan, Jason Wu and J. Mendel. Some slits were so high it was borderline risqué.
Spring is typically the season where flowers make their way into our closets again. Big, bold flowers blossomed throughout Michael Kors collection. He used everything from roses to daisies and even created some 3-dimensional floral pieces like pretty tulle skirt with yellow buttercups embroidered throughout. This certainly brings the garden straight to our closets. Other designers who embraced this trend included Anna Sui, who always has a fun, whimsical collection and Carolina Herrera who showed a bold floral cocoon shaped dress.

With ankle grazing fringe, Proenza Schouler had a refreshing take on the design detail often associated with the classic flapper dress of the 1920s. They weren’t the only ones to bring on the fringe festival at fashion week. Reed Krakoff and Tory Burch also included this trend in their collections. Designer Ohne Titel, had layers of fringe over body hugging dresses draped in an interesting way that draped fringe in a modern way. Sporty inspirations also had a strong presence through the use of mesh and panels in so many collections. Alexander Wang went so far as to create some looks that were a complete take on sneakers.
Overall New York Fashion Week didn’t disappoint and some of these trends can easily be worn now even though it’s fall.
