If sneakers were clothes, Alexander Wang’s spring 2015 collection would be on the top of the list. Imagine the Spice Girls were still performing today, this collection would have been the perfect wardrobe for a grown up ‘Sporty Spice’. The entire collection was a take on athleticism and some pieces even looked like de-constructed sneakers. Just look at the series of tennis dresses, tops and jackets that were a direct reinterpretation of the white and green classic Adidas Stan Smith sneakers. With perforations, mesh bodices and technical fabrics often used in sports clothing, he really took the time to create something fresh, comfortable and modern.
Wang used athletic knits to create garments that were body conscious yet had some structure by way of being sculpted to the body. The injection of electric colours mimicked athletic footwear trends today. “As everyone knows, there’s an infatuation with sneakers right now,” Wang told Women’s Wear Daily. Wang, who was wearing Nikes told the Associate Press “Sneakers for me have always been part of my uniform. It’s something that’s iconic in my generation — you know, a cult of sneakers.”
The interesting thing to note is despite the strong athletic connection, all the models were in sexy high heels.
